EMPLOYMENT BACKGROUND UPDATED 2022

Hello

As a very young man I enjoyed walks in the country and always thought that I wanted to be an Architect. Teachers at Secondary School warned me off architecture as a career. I took their advice.
Thus I started off my career in construction at Liverpool Polytechnic studying Quantity Surveying, I was told by staff and students alike that I would be better suited to being an Architect than a QS. I took their advice.
After a year off in which I travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand  I joined Kingston Polytechnic where I obtained my BA, Diploma and RIBA Part III qualifications.
Although my CV looks very long I have worked for a limited number of companies.  Including North British Housing Association developments. Many of the items listed on my CV are concurrent events rather than merely chronological. I have re-joined old employers in new roles and locations at different times. In 2006 I was looking for a new challenge as I was coming to the end of a 3 Year QA mission at DLG Architects and took the opportunity to set up OWLarchitecture with a former colleague.

I have a broad experience in many types of buildings and procurement methods. I have had an extremely broad range of roles within architectural practice, from freelance student to managing director of a 70 strong practice. I am well able to deal with whatever you care to throw at me.
I have a Msc in IT in Property and Construction from Salford University. Being IT and CAD literate I have handled both Microstation and AutoCAD projects, but now use Revit with BIM potential….
In 2003 I was working at Watson & Batty Architects in Guiseley near Leeds on Healthcare and Schools Projects.
In 2004 I moved to DLG Architects with offices in Leeds and London.
In 2007 I set up OWLarchitecture and later transposed the name to OWLarchitecture.com
… and here we are….
My business plan is merely to earn a living whilst producing “Quietly Functional and Competent Buildings” and not to grow into a business to be sold on. Occasional consultancy to other businesses in the industry complements my main focus of working on projects. These vary from £5000 to £5 million and are usually for end user clients such as; Home Owners, Community Groups, Church Schools, Dentist & GP`s etc… Refurbishments often have an appropriate focus on energy efficiency, Space, Light, Ventilation & Insulation.

My Architect and Teacher Trained wife Suzanne White offers worthwhile insights into my work – especially with schools and now Suzanne offers a garden design service directly to homeowners as well as via Full Circle Garden Design in Leeds, West Yorkshire, Whilst I continue with Architectural Design Services

Many thanks for your interest.
